Reading each night is the single most
important task you can do to support and encourage ongoing learning at
home. We suggest 20-30 minutes of
reading and another 5 minutes of discussion if possible.
Here are some
guiding questions for students to be
thinking about during reading and
for family members to ask after reading to encourage
comprehension. These are all based on
the reading focus for the past month in our classrooms.
What
is the point of view of the book? Who is
telling the story and how do you know?
Do
you agree with their point of view? Why
or why not?
Point
out 5 precise or vivid verbs. What are
they? What do you think they mean? (Use
the context to figure the meaning out)
Can
you tell me a summary of either the book or the chapter(s) that you read
tonight? What happened at the beginning,
in the middle, and at the end?
What
do you think will happen next and why?
If
you could write the next chapter or a sequel to the book, what would you write?
How
do the illustrations clarify or enhance the words in the book?
Who
were the main characters? How did their
actions change or influence the sequence of events in the story or chapter?
As you can see, we have been working on
comprehending Fiction and Realistic Fiction . If you are reading Informational
text some things to think about are:
What did I learn while reading? Name 3
things and show where in the book you found that information. Why did the author write this book?
