Spirit Assembly on Tuesday. Third Graders, Wear BLUE!
A few photos from our DOWNTOWN FIELD TRIP
What a wonderful trip we had to Downtown Portland. Students were so enthusiastic when they began seeing buildings, bridges, and streets that they had learned about in the classroom the past couple weeks. Here are some photos that were taken:
Students meeting with a knowledgeable lieutenant at the fire station.
Students feeling the wall of the fire station. When the sun shines through the stained glass and reflects on this wall it resembles fire! Unfortunately, we didn't have much sun to check it out but we were so thankful for no rain during our walking tour!
Students peering down into a Shanghai Tunnel.
A group of students learning many historical facts from our wonderful tour guides! |
Before indoor electricity was available, early buildings were built with tall doorways to let in light. |
The first "fire engine" powered by white horses so they could be seen at night. |
The first firefighters in Portland were all volunteers. |
Can you spot the elk? |
Skidmore Fountain, built in 1888. "Good Citizens are the Riches of a City" |
These columns are made of cast iron. |
Shanghai Tunnels |
This building has 13 chimneys to keep the rooms warm in the early days. |

Earl Boyles 3rd Graders had a wild time at the zoo today. The weather was beautiful and we had a great time on our visit to the Oregon Zoo. We were so proud of the kids and how they conducted themselves while we were there. They will be very tired tonight after all of the walking that we did today. Here are just a few pictures from our trip.

Animal Research
We are so excited for the Zoo Field Trip tomorrow!
In Room 1, almost all the students have finished researching their animals and completing their slides. Nearly all have given their presentations to the class. Several have even finished compiling their information into their research papers!
Here is a snippet from a few student's collection of slides:
Kaylie's Habitat slide about Polar Bears
David's Predators and Behavior slide about Rhinos
Jose's Fun Facts slide about Pythons
Ask your child which animal they studied and if they can tell you any fun facts about it!

Hi Families! Next Thursday, May 12th all 3rd grade classes will be headed to the Oregon Zoo for a field trip. This excursion is linked to our animal research projects that all students are currently working on in their classroom. We will leave school at 9:10 so please make sure your child is on time to school that day. If you have not yet paid the $4 entrance fee for your child please do the as soon as possible. On the day of the trip it will be important for your child to dress in layers. The zoo is quite shady and can be very cold. Comfortable shoes are a must as we will be doing lots of walking! We'll eat lunch at the zoo and return to school around 2:00.
